Joined us for a webinar with API’s outside counsel, Mark Robertson, of Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP, to discuss the benefits of API Standard 1164 achieving Certification as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) under the Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies Act of 2002, commonly referred to as the SAFETY Act. This SAFETY Act Certification provided companies using the management system approach of API Std 1164, 3rd edition important and wide-ranging liability protections if a cyber-terrorist attack impacted their pipeline operations. The SAFETY Act was passed into law in response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It provided incentives for the development and deployment of anti-terrorism technologies while establishing liability limitations for claims following an act of terrorism. API Std 1164 was included on the exclusive list of DHS Approved Products for Homeland Security, offering significant value to companies utilizing the standard as part of their cybersecurity management systems. The webinar reviewed how API Members benefited from this important designation.
