According to the 2023 Joint Association Survey on Drilling Costs (JAS), there was an increase in drilling expenditures from 2022 to 2023. Total drilling expenditures were estimated to be $114.9 billion in 2023, compared to $96.0 billion during the previous year. The oil and natural gas industry spent 19.7 percent more annually drilling and equipping wells in the U.S. in 2023 than it did in 2022. Meanwhile, the number of wells increased by 0.9 percent and total footage increased by 5.7 percent. The average depth per well increased 15.1 percent from 2022 to 2023 while the average cost per foot increased 3.0 percent over the same period.
